Shivering or shivers is the name applied to a rare neuromuscular syndrome or disease in horses. The
condition has been recognized in draft horses for centuries1-10 and has also has been reported in light
harness horses, hunters, hunter-jumpers, hacks, Hanoverian-cross breds6, and occasionally
Thoroughbreds.2,3,5,6,8,11,12,13 It is considered very rare in ponies.2The condition occurs at all ages with
reports in horses as young as one year of age1,3,5,14.
The disease primarily affects one or both hind limbs and the tail.2,6,10,15 The signs of shivering consist
of periodic spasms of the muscles in the pelvic region, pelvic limbs, and tail.3 Mildly affected horses show
a tenseness or trembling of the hindlimbs and sudden jerky extensor movements of the tail that cause it to
elevate. The signs may occur only when the animal is backed up or on lifting a hind foot. In more
severely affected animals upon backing up, the hindlimb is suddenly raised, semi-flexed and abducted
with the hoof held in the air. The limb trembles, and the tail is usually elevated simultaneously and
trembles.2,3,6,10,11,12,15,16 The superficial muscles of the thigh and quarter quiver, while the tail is elevated
and tremulous. In a few moments the spasms of the limb and tail cease, the limb is slowly extended and
the foot brought to the ground.2,10 However the signs will return if the animal is made to back up again.
